In the late 1880's, a negro family, traveling Line Road, was forced to
camp on the Cossatot River near the station house, due to the illness of
their son. The youngster died, and when a gravesite was requested by
the parents, they were directed to a spot on top of the hill about 400
yards south of Jim Overturf's school. It was atop this same hill
that Andy Lewis blocked off three acres of land and donated it for a
school yard and cemetery when Overturf became a district. Here
"Preacher" Grant Mize built a school house, box type, using 12 inch boards
and stripping the cracks for the walls. The first school directors
were Andy Lewis and Jim Ward. About 1917, the school teacher had cleaned up after school, and burned the trash. When the fire was finally put out, the building was burned down. Fortunately the building was insured, and the five hundred dollars received from the insurance company was used to construct a new school house which was a one room frame building. Overturf Elementary School was consolidated with Grannis and Gillham in 1946. The Overturf Cemetery, which was started with the grave of a young Negro in 1880's now contains nearly 300 graves. The community Cemetery Association sponsors a pie supper each year to raise funds for the upkeep of the building and grounds. At this pie supper, there is a brief business meeting wherein committee men are elected for the following year. There is a Homecoming the third Sunday in May each year, enabling old timers to get together to visit, and the younger ones to get acquainted. The one room frame building which was constructed in about 1917 is still in good condition, and used regularly. By Mrs. M.C. Frachiseur on 3/12/1983 |
