Special Olympics is an international program of year--round sports training and athletic competition for more than one million children and adults with mental retardation.

Our Mission is . . . to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals with mental retardation by giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Special Olympics believes that competition among those of equal abilities is the best way to test its athlete's skills, measure their progress, and inspire them to grow.  Special Olympics believes that its program of sports training and competition helps people with mental retardation become physically fit and grow mentally, socially, and spiritually.  Special Olympics believes that consistent training is required to develop sports skills.

For Track (running) events that are marked with an asterisk (*), the following will apply.  As an example, if an athlete is running the 100 Meter Race in over 26 seconds, that athlete should be moved to another event (possibly the 50 Meter Race) where h/she can be more competitive.  If an athlete is running the 50 Meter Race in less than 7 seconds, that athlete should be moved to another event (possibly the 100 Meter Race) where he/she can be more competitive.

For Field events that are marked with an asterisk (*), the following will apply.  If an athlete is participating in the High Jump but jumps less than 90 cm, that athlete should be moved to another even (possibly the standing long jump) where he/she can be more competitive.  If an athlete is participating in the Softball Throw and is throwing further than 35 meters, that athlete should be moved to another event (possibly the Shot Put) where he/she can be more competitive.

The only way to eliminate heats that are potential "blowouts", is to set parameters.  In this way if an athlete has reached his/her potential in an event, that athlete can then participate in a more challenging event.  If an athlete has tried to participate in an event but because of his/her ability cannot compete in an even heat, that athlete should be moved to an event that meets the athlete's ability.
